World of Sport has Returned!

This past Saturday afternoon, at 5pm, the famous World of Sport finally returned to the screens of British televisions for the first time since 1985.  After 33 years of being left high and dry, the British wrestling audience got to once again delve into the world of wrestling on a national scale with a reported 1.2 million people tuning in, proving once again that wrestling in the United Kingdom is, and always has been, popular with generations of all ages.

After a year and a half since the initial pilot episode in January 2017, the show's latest episode continued where the series left off with Grado still holding the WOS Championship.  The show opened with General Manager Stu Bennett (aka Wade Barrett) professing that a new era was beginning in British Wrestling but as he was about to really get going Grado walked down the ring only for Bennett to tell the Scot that he doesn't look like the sort of Champion he wants on the show.

In a match that was made just a few minutes earlier Rampage Brown, Justin Sysum, Crater, Adam Maxted, and Sha Samuels competed in a 5 way elimination number 1 contenders match to face Grado for his title later on in the night.  After Samuels, Maxted, and Crater were eliminated the result was left unclear with Sysum 'winning', only for Bennett to reveal that Rampage had not been officially eliminated; to rectify the situation Bennett made the main event a triple threat match.  In the shows main event Grado faced Ramage and Sysum in an entertaining triple threat that focuses more on theatrics that actual wrestling, but non-the-less did allow for all three men to shine in front of an audience bigger than that of WWE's here in the UK.  When all the action was said-and-done it was Rampage who ended the show as the new WOS Champion after leveling Grado with a huge DDT.  This was a positive result for the promotion not only because Rampage looks credible but for the fact that having a heel champion makes people tune in, in order to see if the face gets any future retribution.

The show also featured a stunner of a match in the form of Will Ospreay taking on Davy Boy Smith Jr. in which both men went back and forth for about 12 minutes.  Although Ospreay was more impressive, hitting a Corkscrew splash from the floor and multiple spinning kicks, it was Smith who got the victory which should send him towards the main event in the near future.  In the opener of a Tag Team Title tournament the impressive team of Kip Sabian and Iestyn Rees saw off Joe Hendry and Martin Kirby in order to advnace to the next round.

Overall WOS has returned with bang and looks like with a little work will become a top quality promotion, just as it was 33 years ago.  The good news is that we are in the midst of the return of British Wrestling to National Treasure status.  Join me here on Wrestling Boom every week for the latest from World of Sport!
