G1 Climax Block B Preview
New Japan Pro Wrestling's premier tournament, the G1 Climax, kick starts on the 14th July with Block A competitors Hiroshi Tanahashi and Minoru Suzuki opening the competition. Last time on Wrestling Boom we previewed Block A and what is has to offer, and this time round we'll be looking at the wrestlers and notable matcheds of Block B.
Block B this year plays host to three previous winners of the G1, those being Hirooki Goto (2008), Tetsuya Naito (2013, 2017), and Kenny Omega (2016). Not just does Block B play host to these three amazing wrestlers but will also be the home of the most anticipated matches of the tournament, those being Kenny Omega vs. Kota Ibushi, and Tetsuya Naito vs. Kenny Omega. First off, The Golden Lovers pair of Omega and Ibushi were only reunited on January 18th of this year and had their biggest match as a tag team in 4 years at Strong Style Evolved in March opposite the Young Bucks, in which they were victorious. When the two meet on August 11th on the final night of Block matches it will surely be one of the hottest contests of the year as both men are in their primes and two of the best wrestlers in the world today...emotions will be running wild that day. The second most highly anticipated match up is Omega vs. Naito a contest which pits last years winner (Naito) against the runner up (Omega) in a rematch from 2017's final. Since then both men have had a tremendous year and will be going out to the ring to prove, not just to the fans, but to each other who is the greater of the two men. Omega will be out for revenge, Naito out to defend his title as G1 winner, but regardless of outcome this match will be one to remember and we only have to wait until July 15th to see the two faction leaders clash.
Sanada, Tetsuya Naito's Los Ingobernables de Japon teammate, is also a Block B competitor meaning that the two brothers in arms will clash for the first time in NJPW history. At Kizuna Road, after the LIJ members raised their arms in respect to one another, Naito raised his arm specifically to Sanada only for Sanada to walk to the back, leaving Naito to ponder his teammate's actions. With heat already beginning to gather between the two wrestlers, it will be interesting to see whether LIJ or the prospect of winning the G1 Climax will come first on either man's agenda on August 8th.
Block B also features Juice Robinson, Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano, Tama Tonga, and Zack Sabre Jr, who have all competed in the G1 at some point in there careers which should make for some enticing storylines and matches. I believe Tetsuya Naito will win Block B and face my Block A winner Jay White in the tournament final. Who would you like to see top Block B? Please comment, like, and come back soon!
