Slammiversary XVI Review
Impact Wrestling put on it's annual summer PPV, Slammiversary, last night from the Rebel Entertainment Complex in Toronto Canada. As of late Impact has seen a vast improvement on the quality of it's product and that has been reflected not just in viewership but also the hype surrounding it's shows. This installment of Slammiversary, the 16th show under that name, was the most anticipated Impact PPV since Bound for Glory 2015, a shows which took place almost 3 years ago. With all wrestling fan's expectations so high did Impact finally deliver with their biggest card of the year? Let's take a look!
In a huge 5150 street fight the Latin American Xchange paring of Santana and Ortiz defended their Tag Team Titles against former LAX, and current OGs members Homicide and Hernandez in what was an exciting clash of generations. The build to this match complemented the contest itself perfectly with the central theme being to prove a point to the opposition as to who truly deserves the LAX name with the Titles serving as a nice reward for the winning team. The match itself featured a lot of action involving tables, ladders, chairs and outside of the ring brawling with a highlight being Hernandez receiving a Moonsault from Santana and Legdrop from Ortiz simultaneously on a ladder. LAX were able to win the match and retain the belts, cementing their legacy as one of Impact's greatest teams.
Tessa Blanchard took on company babyface Allie in a match that people believe Blanchard's many years of Indy experience would show up any lack of technique in which Allie suffers from, but the people were wrong. This match showed both women in good light and was a well-fought, action packed match that either wrestler could have won. Things got serious when Allie leveled Tessa with her Allie Driver, similar to the Attitude Adjustment, onto the floor outside the ring in a move that revealed a ruthless side of Allie we rarely get to see. After 11 minutes, however, it was Blanchard who got the victory.
In the show's main event the Impact Heavyweight Championship was on the line in a match that pitted current champion Austin Aries against the number 1 contender Moose. Skepticism did surround this match but so did anticipation with many wondering whether or not Moose could deliver on such a grand stage; some people, on the other hand, wondered whether Aries had what it took to defeat the ex-American footballer. The match was very entertaining with Moose proving why he was the rightful contender by forcing Aries to pull out all the stops in order to keep his title. Aries did retain after he hit the Brainbuster in what was a solid end to the match and the show.
Slammiversary XVI really was a groundbreaking show for Impact and could potentially be among the greatest PPV's in the company's 16 year history. What were your thoughts on Slammiversary? Please comment, and follow for more from the wrestling world.
