Top 5 Rey Mysterio Matches in WWE History
The Master of the 619, the Ultimate Underdog, the man formerly known as Calibri, is one of the greatest and most loved in-ring performers in the history of the wrestling world. Mysterio is one of the original wrestlers to have brought the Lucha style to the mainstream and is known globally for his ability to make the action exciting and get the crowd buzzing. After a three year absence, Mysterio has signed a two year deal with World Wrestling Entertainment, a move that shocked and surprised the Universe. In celebration of his return to the WWE I have decided to take a look back at his 5 greatest WWE matches of all time!
5) Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison- Smackdown September 4th 2009
This clash with John Morrison is probably the best non-PPV match of 2009 and is one of Smackdown's best matches of the decade as it saw two extremely talented, charismatic wrestlers, with perfect chemistry put on a clinic of a showing. Going into this match Rey Mysterio was the Intercontinental Champ but after the match it was Morrison who was carrying the prestigious belt after dethroning the veteran champion. Now, you may be wondering why a loss for Mysterio is one of his greatest matches, but it comes down to the in-ring action, the selfless act of a loosing the title during such a hot reign, and going down to Morrison in a way that made both competitors look strong in the process.
4) Rey Mysterio vs. Chavo Guerrero- The Great American Bash 2004
Rey Mysterio and Chavo Guerrero were long-time rivals during their time on Smackdown between 2002 and 2006 and had many classic clashes during this exciting era. Both men are multi-time Cruiserwieght Champions and amazingly athletic superstars mixing both high-flying Lucha with technical mat based wrestling. Their best match against one another came at The Great American Bash in 2004 when Mysterio successfully defended the Cruiserwieght Title against Chavo in a 19 minute back-and-forth clash that was by far one of the best matches of the year and one of the most underrated of all time. Mysterio won with a Sunset Flip/pinning combination that sums up how close the match really was.
3) Royal Rumble Match- Royal Rumble 2006
Going into the Royal Rumble match in 2006 Mysterio's world had collapsed just a few months prior with the death of his best friend Eddie Guerrero, however, Mysterio, with all the agony and grief, dedicated his participation in this match to Eddie. After entering the match 2nd and lasting for over 1 hour, Mysterio went over the likes of Big Show, Triple H, and the man he eliminated to win, Randy Orton. With love in his heart and determination in his mind, the Biggest Little Man in Sports Entertainment won the biggest match of the year in incredible fashion. This was the match that took Mysterio's career to the next level and onto the match which is next up on this list.
2) Rey Mysterio vs. Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton- Wrestlemania 22
The Royal Rumble win set up this match, a Wrestlemania main event triple threat against Kurt Angle and Randy Orton for Smackdown's grandest prize, the World Heavyweight Championship, a title Mysterio was yet to hold. After a fun entrance that set the tone for the match itself, Mysterio was on fire taking on both competitors before smashing Orton with a 619 and West Coast Pop for the finish. This is one of my favorite matches of all time as Mysterio is my favorite wrestler and to see him have his moment in front of millions of viewers was fascinating. The match was only 9 minutes long but was the making of Mysterio and was his night, a night he celebrated with Vickie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero, Eddie's Wife and Nephew.
1) Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Jericho- The Bash 2009
The clash at the Bash between two veterans is Rey's greatest match of all time for one reason, that reason being chemistry. Mysterio and Jericho had competed with one another in ECW, WCW, and WWE in years gone by and exchanged the Intercontinental Championship a couple of times in PPV's leading up to this match. Both the Title and the Mask were on the line which added a touch of desperation to the mindset of the wrestlers and allowed them to put it all out there. Watching these two go at it for over 15 minutes was like watching the perfect painting, well, being painted and was perfection throughout. Counters, rapid attacks, and the well-timed execution of finishing moves makes this a rare 5 star match.
So it was the 8 and a half year old clash between two of the greatest in-ring workers of all time that topped this list. What is your favorite Mysterio match of all time? Please comment and return shortly.
