We All Love A Heel!!!

In wrestling, as we all know, there is a similar theme throughout every match, every storyline, and every angle, that being a face going head-to-head with a heel, bar the odd exception in which a face versus face or heel versus heel showdown takes place.  Faces, the lovable, kind-hearted do-gooders we all cheer for are seen as being the reasons we all invest in wrestling in the first place, with the sole purpose of our viewership being to see the heroes come out on top.  Although we cheer the babyfaces, is it really the good guys we love or are the heels the reasons we tune in week after week?  Let's take a look!

Throughout wrestling history we have seen a multitude of faces who have been the poster-boy of an era for their respective promotions.  For example, we have had Hulk Hogan in the late 80's in the WWE, Bret Hart in the mid-90's, and AJ Styles in the mid-2000's for TNA, but with every great face we have a great heel to rival.  Hogan's being Andre, Hart's being Michaels, and Style's being Samoa Joe.  More recently we have seen CM Punk play heel to John Cena in 2011-12, and Tomasso Ciampa being the evil to Gargano's good.  Even though the majority our parts well at live events, cheering the faces and booing the heels, inside we can't help but feel a burning desire to turn on the crowd and get behind the bad guy....but there are only a few of us brave enough to actually do this.  When we look at wrestlers we want to return from the past it is often the heels we turn to with CM Punk, Mr Perfect, and Shawn Michaels being a the top of our list.  Let's not forget Jeff Hardy's turn to the dark side in late 2010 in the biggest shock in TNA history when when the Charismatic Enigma didn't just turn his back on Angle and Anderson but also on his 'Creatures' causing some of the highest viewership in the companies history.

Good guys are entertaining and are usually the first reason we actually watch wrestling but after a few angles of a rivalry or matches in a series we soon appreciate more and more the work ethic, and character portrayal of the heel which allows us to connect with them on a more genuine basis as we realise that their situation is more closely related to our lives than that of the face.  Without the heel the face is simply a wrestler and can't be shown to be good, because there can be no good without bad.  What are your thought's on heels in the wrestling business?  Please comment, and stay tuned!
