G1 Climax 2018: Best Ever?

New Japan Pro Wrestling's G1 Climax has just ended in spectacular, if not shocking, fashion, with the main event capping off a tournament which was outstanding from start to finish.  Let's take a look back at the highlights and heartbreak from this years tournament.

Let's start by talking about the man that would go on to win the entire thing, that being The Ace Hirsohi Tanahashi.  Tanahashi's tournament kick-started on July 14th with a huge victory against fellow veteran Minoru Suzuki, a man that has never won the tournament but took The Ace to the absolute limit.  After putting on classics against Jay White, Hangman Page, and Kazuchika Okada, Tanahashi would win Block A after netting 15 points.  Although it was a close call with Okada who got 13 points, you can't argue with the fact that Hiroshi was deserving of topping the Block's table.

In Block B it was Kenny Omega's Golden Lovers partner Kota Ibushi who finished at the top with 12 points after defeating Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto, and Kenny Omega himself throughout the tournament.  In my opinion it was Block B that was the most entertaining of the two blocks with the storyline between the Golden Lovers playing out perfectly and the tension between LIJ members Tetsuya Naito and Sanada developing really helped to add depth to what is sometimes simply a series of matches.  Although Block A's talent was superior when it comes to G1 lineage, the turmoil in Block B gave it's matches an 'edge-of-the-seat' feel.

On Finals night when all was said and done, Hirsohi Tanahashi, with Katsuyori Shibata in his corner, got the better of Kota Ibushi (who was aided by Omega) after hitting 3 High Fly Flows for the pinfall.  After the bout, Tanahashi offered to share the spotlight with Ibushi, but Ibushi left the ring politely allowing The Ace to soak up the atmosphere of his third G1 victory.

When it comes to wrestlers that more than proved there worth in the company, credit has to be given to a certain Australian, yes, former United States Champion Jay White was the tournaments MVP, being able to gain 12 points, finishing third in Block A due to picking up wins against Okada, Elgin, and Makabe.  Overall, the tournament was an all-time spectacle and potentially the best G1 in history.  What are your thoughts on the G1 2018?  Please comment and stay in touch!
