Top 5 Summerslam Matches of all Time
The Summerslam PPV has been thrilling the WWE Universe for the past 30 years and will sure do the same this year when it comes to us live from the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York, on August 19th. Over it's three decade lifetime Summerslam has produced spectacular matches that will be treasured forever, however, there are some bouts that stand out from the rest, so join me now as I attempt to count down the Top 5 Summerslam Matches of all Time!!!
4) Triple H vs. The Rock- Summerslam 1998
Triple H and The Rock are two of the greatest superstars of all time and were two of the men who helped to define the Attitude Era and make it the memorable time we still love to this day. In 1998 both men were on the fringe of stardom having battle a couple of times previously over the Intercontinental Championship, with a spectacular match taking place each time; the showdown at the Slam 98 would be no different. The second ladder match on this list, HHH vs. Rocky is one of the best singles Ladder Matches of all time and was, in my opinion, the match that truly got them recognized as stars and launched both of their careers. The match itself saw interference from Chyna, and Mark Henry, and the usage of ladders in a way that enhanced the stipulation, before HHH successfully retained his I.C. Gold. If you haven't already, you need to check out this match.
3) Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudleys- Summerslam 2000
Yet another match to feature ladders this was the first ever TLC match in WWE history and it could well be the greatest of them all. Three of the best tag teams of the era, Edge & Christain, The Hardy Boyz, and The Dudleyz fought in front of over 17,000 raucous fans over the coveted Tag Team Titles. The best spots of the match included Jeff Hardy's Swanton Bomb off a Ladder onto Bubba Ray who himself was on a table, Lita pushing Edge and Christian off a Ladder, and Christian being hit with a 3-D through a table. This was the Attitude Era at it's most classic and was a showcase worthy of all the attention it has rightfully received. A great showing by all 6 men and Lita.
2) British Bulldog vs. Bret Hart- Summerslam 1992
Summerslam 1992 took place at Wembley Stadium in London England, in front on of over 80,000 fans in what would be the biggest non-USA attendance in WWE history. Why they have never held a major PPV in the UK since is completely unknown. The Intercontinental Title would be up for grabs in the main event as Bret Hart would defend against home-country hero the British Bulldog. The match latest 25 minutes and felt like a main event should, spectacular in all ways, from start to finish, and to top it all off, the Bulldog got the victory after reversing a Sunset Flip attempt into a pinfall to earn himself the Intercontinental Championship for the first time. This was a wrestlers match, a technical classic, and a showstopper.
1) AJ Styles vs. John Cena- Summerslam 2016
Although many of you probably believed that Bret Hart vs. Bulldog would be number 1, I can't help but appreciate AJ Styles vs. John Cena from Summerslam 2016 as being the better match. Styles had been in the WWE only 7 months at the time and had already skyrocketed to the top and was on a mission to take down the poster boy, John Cena. After battling at Money in the Bank, and Battleground in a 6 man tag, Styles and Cena would meet once again, this time at Summerslam. Styles eventually won, after 23 minutes, after reversing an Attitude Adjustment into a Styles Clash and hitting a second Phenomenal Forearm for the pinfall victory. Yes, that's right, after just 7 months in the company AJ Styles pinned Cena clean to claim his place among the greatest of all time and prove to Cena who really is the best in the world.
So Styles and Cena take the top spot, but what is your favorite Summerslam match of all time? Please comment and come back soon for some Tag Team Talk!
5) Rey Mysterio vs. Eddie Guerrero- Summerslam 2005
In 2005 long time friends and on/off rivals Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero took their feud to the next level with a series of contests that started at Wrestlemania XXI and culminated at the Hottest Event of the Summer. After some shenanigans, and betrayal, which saw Guerrero claim he was the father of Mysterio's son Dominick, the score would finally be settled at Summerslam in a Ladder match in which the custody of Dominick was hanging in the balance. After 20 minutes of back-and-forth, exciting action, it wad Mysterio that managed to grab the legal documents and claim his son as his own, once and for all. Mysterio's wife Angie, Vickie Guerrero, and Dominick himself played a part in this match and added to it's importance both to it's outcome and it's place on the card of one of the greatest shows of the decade.
