Top 5 Money in the Bank PPV Matches

Hello Boomers and welcome back.  Today we will be returning to the bank to look at some of the best matches the popular spring PPV has produced.  The only rules are that the match cannot be an actual MITB match and, of course, be flat-out amazing. Here are the top 5!

5)  CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan- Money in the Bank 2012

This was one of the the most highly anticipated matches of 2012 due to Daniel Bryan coming so close to defeating CM Punk at Over the Limit a few months prior.  With Punk and Bryan being such technical greats, and the addition of AJ Lee (Punk's real life wife) as the Special Guest Referee, the crowd knew what they were going to get, and what they got was excellence.  This match was No DQ and featured Kendo Sticks and multiple interferences from Lee before Punk managed to once again defeat Bryan after a Back Superplex through a table.  Punk held on to the title a further 6 months, leaving Bryan to go to the next best thing, a partnership with Kane.

4) Randy Orton vs. Christian- Money in the Bank 2011

This match was just 1 out of a series of fantastic contests between the Viper and the Captain Charisma in the Spring of 2011.  After loosing the World Heavyweight Title to Orton on the 6th May episode of Smackdown and failing to regain it at both Over the Limit and Capital Punishment, Christian was out to prove himself to be better than the multi-time World Champion.  This match included an exchange of finishers, and excellent back-and-forth brawling.  As Orton went to hit the RKO Christian spat in his face causing the Legend Killer to kick Christian in the groin and due to a unique stipulation, lost the title via disqualification.  A month later at Summerslam Orton would defeat Christian to regain the old Big Gold.

3) Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns- Money in the Bank 2016

In the Spring on 2016 Roman Reigns was the WWE Champion after winning the Title from Triple H at Wrestlemania XXXII.  After two successful defenses against AJ Styles, Reigns would get a new challenger, the man who never lost the belt and the Big Dog's former ally, Seth Rollins.  Rollins was returning fresh from an injury, which caused him to forfeit the title in October 2015, and was out to regain what was rightfully his. After some solid action Reigns went for his signature Spear but fell right into a Pedigree, which was followed up by a second Pedigree for the win, allowing Rollins to recapture the Title.  When the night was believed to be over, Ambrose hit the ring and cashed in his briefcase, which he won earlier that night, pinned Rollins and became the new WWE Champion.

2) Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose- Money in the Bank 2015

Another rematch on the list, Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose was the second match in their series following their contest at Elimination Chamber a month prior.  This was a ladder match, and a great one at that, with the ladders being brought in to play throughout and Rollins being launched onto a ladder set between the ring and the announcers table.  After 35 minutes of action both Rollins and Ambrose unhooked the title at the same time and fell to the floor simultaneously, however, it was the Architect who managed to retain his grip on the belt allowing him to retain.  Rollins held the belt until October of the same year.

1) CM Punk vs. John Cena- Money in the Bank 2011

The greatest Money in the Bank PPV match obviously goes to CM Punk vs. John Cena from 2011.  Punk entered this match as the red-hot heel, who received a rapturous hometown reception, with Cena entering to one of the most hostile crowds in WWE history.  Punk out-wrestled Cena and won the WWE Championship for the first time following a GTS.  This match featured appearances from John Laurinitis, Mr McMahon and Alberto Del Rio, who failed a cash-in.  With the WWE Title in his possession Punk blew a kiss to the Chairman and left the Allstate Arena via the crowd to a thunderous applause.  Punk earned his name the Best in the World following this match.
