Best Backlash Ever!
WWE has held 13 shows under the Backlash name and will hold the 14th this Sunday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, in what is hopefully a better show than the Greatest Royal Rumble...but let's not go there. In the wake of Backlash 2018, I just want to have a quick chat about the best Backlash show to ever grace our TV screens (or whatever device you watch your wrestling on these days), that being Backlash 2007.
Backlash 2007 was held in the Philips Arena, in Atlanta, Georgia, in front of a lively crowd of 14,500 members of the WWE Universe. The show followed on from Wrestlemania XXIII, one of the best Mania's of all time, and had a lot to live up to, and boy, it lived up to it alright, with three of the matches making it onto my Top 10 Backlash Matches of all Time List. The show kicked off with an amazing tag team bout between the Hardy Boyz and the team of old-school brawlers, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch. This match is one of the most underrated tag team matches of all time, and not having very high expectations quickly gained the attention of the thousands in attendance. The Hardy Boyz were able to walk away with the World Tag Team Titles (now the Raw Tag Team Titles) after a 14 minute encounter, mostly dominated by the heal brawlers. Three very well put together matches followed that included Melina retaining the Women's Championship, Chris Benoit keeping hold of the U.S. Title, and Mr. McMahon, yes, the chairman himself, leaving Georgia as the new ECW Champion.
As good as these matches were it was the co-main event, a Last Man Standing contest between Batista and the Undertaker for the World Heavyweight Championship, that really got us going. In a very highly anticipated rematch from Wrestlemania under a month earlier, the two tough guys went hell-for-leather for a good 20 minutes before Batista put an abrupt, yet satisfying, end to the match when he Speared Taker off the stage, taking the match to a draw. This is one of the greatest Last Man Standing matches in company history and elevated not just the show itself but also the entirety of the Batista/Undertaker feud.
Finally on the show we saw an awesome Fatal-4-Way between Raw's best superstars at the time WWE Champion John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Edge, and Randy Orton, in what was Orton's first ever WWE Title match. After almost 20 minutes of back-and-forth action and several near falls, the match came to a chaotic climax in which Cena retained after being smashed with a Sweet Chin Music and falling onto an already downed Orton for the 3 mount.
Backlash 2007 is still to this day the best Backlash show of all time, and also one of the greatest PPV's full stop. What is your favorite Backlash show? please comment, like, and follow me on social media.
