Rivalry Rewind #2: Triple H vs. Randy Orton
Last time on Rivalry Rewind we looked back on the feud between John Cena and CM Punk, one which proved that winning the final battle does not always win you the war. This time around we'll be looking at the time when the master and apprentice went head to head in a rivalry that began from jealously, that being Triple H vs. Randy Orton from 2004-2005.
In the Summer of 2004 Evolution (Triple H, Ric Flair, Batista and Randy Orton) was running rough shot over the Raw roster and had been for the past 18 months and were looking stronger than ever, especially when the youngster of the group Randy Orton gained a WWE Title shot at Summerslam 2004. When Summerslam was over, Orton walked out of his match with Chris Benoit as the newest, and youngest World Heavyweight Champion of all time, at the age of 24. On the following night of Raw Triple H and the rest of Evolution would turn on Orton out of spite and lay a beating on him, with Triple H, a week later, becoming the first contender to Orton's title reign.
The two met at Unforgiven in September with the crowd strongly behind Orton, despising The Game for his heelish antics and acts of hatred towards his former friend and apprentice. After the referee had been taken out, Triple H belted Orton with a chair, followed by a Pedigree to defeat the Legend Killer and won the title for the 3rd time. The way in which Triple H defeated Orton only proved that any form of regret and sorrow had well and truly vanished from The Game and he was focused solely on the Title.
After Triple H defended the Big Gold against Shawn Michaels at Taboo Tuesday, and Orton demolished Ric Flair inside a Steel Cage, HHH and Orton would once again meet but this time it was at Survivor Series with their respective soldiers in tow. After an almost 24 minute battle Orton and his team of Jericho, Benoit and Maven would be victorious over Triple H and his team of Batista, Edge and Snitsky, however, as this was not for the Title, Orton would have to make do and take the win for what it was...bragging rights over his former master. Orton would get another shot at The Game and his title, this time at the Royal Rumble 2 months later in January 2005, but yet again Triple H would leave the PPV with the belt around his waste. Triple H would go on to loose the title to another Evolution member, Batista, at Wrestlemania 21. As for Orton, well, he would get his one-on-one victory against the King of Kings but he would have to wait until No Mercy 2007.
Personally this is one of my favorite rivalries of all time with the intensity, determination and hatred really making it something special. What do you think of this rivalry? Please comment, like and follow for more.
