Top 5 Years in WWE History!!!
Hello folks and welcome back to Wrestling Boom. Today I have decided to talk about one of the most highly debated topics in the wrestling world, that being the argument over which years are the best in the history of the WWE. With many different wrestling styles, storylines, and characters gracing out screens over the years and many periods having both good and bad moments it is an extremely challenging task to try and decided upon the best 5 years in company history, but here goes!
5) 2015
2015 was a monumental year for the WWE and featured two events that changed the face of wrestling for years to come. The first event being Wrestlemania XXI in which Seth Rollins cashed-in his MITB Briefcase during a match between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns to finally capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The second big event was TakeOver Brooklyn which took the NXT brand from a developmental scheme to the third brand of the company with both the Sasha Banks vs. Bayley and Finn Balor vs. Kevin Owens matches gaining critical acclaim. John Cena's US Title Open Challenge, Sting's in-ring return, and the Brock Lesnar vs. Undertake feud also took place this year.
4) 1997
In 1997 WWE went through a transition, a transition that took the company from a viewership slum to the beginning of the most popular era in wrestling history....the Attitude Era. With thanks to the awesome clash between Bret Hart and Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 13, the rivalry between DX and the Nation of Dominion, and The Undertaker's menacing WWE Title reign, viewers were once again pleased to be tuning in week-after-week. The first Hell in a Cell match, in which Shawn Michaels took on Taker himself also took place this year which played host to the first appearance of Kane. If your are not a fan of 1997, you need to look at your life decisions.
3) 1992
The New Generation as it is now know was kick started in 1992 and ran until 1997 before the WWE moved to the Attitude Era, however, out of this eras 5 year span it was the initial year of 1992 that was the most impressive, here's why. First of all the year played host to the famous 1992 Royal Rumble a match won by Ric Flair for the WWF Championship which featured some of the greatest wrestlers of all time including Randy Savage, the Undertaker, and Ted DiBiase. Summerslam of that year was equally as great with the 90,000 in Wembley arena getting to see the classics between The Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage, and The British Bulldog and Bret Hart. One more stand out match from the year was Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels from Survivor Series (one of my favourite of all time). Overall, 1992 was a top year for technical wrestling and entertainment alike.
2) 2009
The PG Era is often looked upon as being a disappointing time in the WWE but I am here to argue differently. Although a lot of the attitude and ruthlessness had been watered down, the focus turned to storylines and in-ring ability. The biggest talking point of the year was Randy Orton's Legacy faction in which he was joined by Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr in the pursuit of taking down Triple H and the McMahons; many battles were fought over the WWE Title. Along with this rivalry we also got Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk where both men proved to be some of the greatest in-ring competitors of all time, putting on entertaining contests every-time they clashed. When Autumn came about we were treated to more CM Punk, this time opposite the Undertaker, and a spectacular inaugural TLC PPV in December.
1) 2005
Here we are at the number 1 spot, and although many will disagree I feel as though I must place 2005 as being the greatest year in WWE history, and here is my argument. In 2005 we had three of the greatest rivalries of the 21st Century, those being the Undertaker vs. Randy Orton in which the Legend took on the Legend Killer, Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio in which two best friends had turned bitter rivals, and John Cena vs. Kurt Angle in a clash between a brawler and a technical expert. As well as these rivalries we got a great match between Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania XXI and a Batista World Heavyweight Title reign that spanned the majority of the year on Raw and Smackdown. 2005 was action packed, the rosters were stacked, and every PPV was jacked; not to mention the drama filled Royal Rumble.
