Image
Hello Boomers and welcome to the new series, Rivalry Rewind.  The series will aim to follow the biggest rivalries in the history of the WWE, and will run every Friday for the next ten weeks, so plenty to get excited about.  This week we look at the rivalry between 'The Best in the World' CM Punk and the 'Cenation Leader' John Cena, which lasted for almost 2 years. In the Summer of 2011 John Cena was the reigning WWE Champion and was the premiere target of The Nexus, lead by no other than CM Punk.  Punk had recently seen of superstars such as Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio but wanted more, he wanted to defeat Cena and prove he was better than the man who had been ruling the roost for the past 6 years.  On 27th June 2011, CM Punk made his presence known when he interrupted John Cena's match with R-Truth, and cut the most popular promo in wrestling history, one which caught the attention on millions worldwide.  After much persistence Punk finally got the matc...

Best Backlash Ever!

Image
WWE has held 13 shows under the Backlash name and will hold the 14th this Sunday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, in what is hopefully a better show than the Greatest Royal Rumble...but let's not go there.  In the wake of Backlash 2018, I just want to have a quick chat about the best Backlash show to ever grace our TV screens (or whatever device you watch your wrestling on these days), that being Backlash 2007. Backlash 2007 was held in the Philips Arena, in Atlanta, Georgia, in front of a lively crowd of 14,500 members of the WWE Universe.  The show followed on from Wrestlemania XXIII, one of the best Mania's of all time, and had a lot to live up to, and boy, it lived up to it alright, with three of the matches making it onto my  Top 10 Backlash Matches of all Time List .  The show kicked off with an amazing tag team bout between the Hardy Boyz and the team of old-school brawlers, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch.  This match is one of the mos...

Top 10 Backlash Matches of all Time

Backlash is a WWE PPV that ran annually from 1999 until 2009, in which is was removed from the WWE schedule only to return in September 2016, only 2 months after the Draft.  Throughout it's 13 show history, which will become 14 on Sunday when Backlash takes place once more, the PPV has played host to some incredible matches.  Here are my top 10 Backlash matches of all time. 10)  Matt Hardy vs. MVP- United States Championship, 2008 This is a classic example of a hidden gem, in which storytelling is at the forefront of the contest. The once tag team of Matt Hardy and MVP split up in shocking fashion in November 2007 when Montel Vontavious Porter had a change of heart and brutally attacked the knee of Hardy.  5 months later, in April 2008, Hardy got his revenge on MVP, defeating him at Backlash and walking away the new United States Champion in the process.  The match was well worked, centering around Hardy's knee injury, with the Carolina native finally ov...
